Designed for undergraduate use, this book contains a general chapter on the history and theory of women’s history, followed by a section on the constructions of early modern woman through Christian and scientific ideas, social prescriptions and intellectual and popular debate. A further section uses the theoretical framework of ‘separate spheres’ for discussion of women and work, law, politics, education, religion and writing. The conclusion addresses recent themes in early modern gender history.
